As some motivation for a Monday, I wanted to talk to you about an interesting client of mine (with his permission). I first met my client approximately 5 months ago. He has a progressive genetic condition which causes the bones in the feet to soften and distort. It also affects the nerves leading to lack of movement and sensation in both feet. He has special insoles and callipers to help him walk. When I started, his feet were pale, cold, little padding so very bony, all his toes were curled under and rigid. In all my years of nursing I had never seen such a severe case. Up until a month ago I visited him weekly (now fortnightly). At the first visit he could not feel me touching his feet at all. Gradually he started getting sensations going up his lower legs. By working all the reflexes in his feet, encouraging better quality messages reaching his brain and improving circulation, his feet are warmer, he has improved sensation in both feet, he is able to move 3 toes on both feet. At my visit last week, he smiled and told me that he played 9 holes of golf for the first time in 2 years, and got blisters on his feet……which he could feel! He was absolutely delighted! Reflexology works with the body to work as efficiently as possible. It may take time but it’s worth it.
