Cortisol

Cortisol is produced by the adrenal glands and is important in so many systems in the body. It affects blood sugar levels, metabolism, water and salt levels, blood pressure, acts as an anti-inflammatory, and affects memory. Cortisol is linked to the body’s fight or flight response.

Cortisol production relates to activity levels. In most people levels are higher in the morning and gradually reduce as the day progresses, although for night workers levels are reversed.

Levels of cortisol also increase during periods of stress.

Small episodes of increased cortisol are not harmful, however sustained high levels in the long term can lead to anxiety and depression.

High levels of cortisol can lead to Cushing’s syndrome which I will be discussing on Saturday. Low levels of cortisol can lead to Addison’s disease, which you can find out more tomorrow.

The adrenal glands are frequently a reflex point that I feel imbalance in. Reflexology helps to calm the body including the adrenal glands. Reflexology helps the body enter a state of deep relaxation, allowing muscles to release tension, improve lymph and blood  circulation, improve nerve function. This helps the body calm stress and maintain a sense of well-being.
