Fun Fact Friday

Did you know that when your stomach gurgles/rumbles it is actually called borborygmus?!
You’ve probably heard about the “fight or flight” response when the sympathetic nervous system gives us boosts of adrenaline, but have you heard about the “rest and digest” response? During this phase the parasympathetic nervous system conserves energy by reducing the heart rate, increasing gland and intestine activity, as well as relaxing sphincter muscles.
This associated slowing down of the body is when the body is able to start healing itself. As a reflexologist I get great satisfaction hearing your guts gurgling away because it is a sign that your body has switched off the sympathetic nervous system and changed to the calming/healing parasympathetic system.
