Zinc has a varied use within our bodies including maintaining our metabolism, supporting our immune system, promoting wound healing, and helping our senses of taste and smell. Foods rich in zinc include: red meat, chicken, and some breakfast cereals. The recommended dose of zinc is 8 mg for women and 11 mg for men. Zinc is useful for: 1. Colds - taken within 24 hours of the cold symptoms starting, zinc has been shown to shorten the length of a cold. 2. Wound healing - zinc helps wounds heal more quickly. 3. Diarrhoea - it can help improve symptoms of diarrhoea caused by low levels of zinc in the diet. 4. Age-related macular degeneration - research suggests that oral zinc supplements may slow the progression of this eye condition. 5. Nappy rash and sunburn - these can be treated with zinc oxide cream. Zinc supplements should not be taken if you are taking certain medications, including: steroids, some blood pressure medications, diuretics, and some treatments for rheumatoid arthritis.
