11/12/2021 0 Comments HugsDay 11 of my holistic health advent calendar is HUGS.
We have spent the last 21 months being separated from our loved ones. Whilst technology, such as Zoom or Teams, has helped to bridge the gap, there really is nothing that can replace a hug! When we hug someone, oxytocin levels rise. Oxytocin is known as the “cuddle hormone”, and is associated with happiness and reduced stress, particularly in women. Hugs produce other feel good hormones, including dopamine and serotonin. Other physical benefits include: immunity boost, reduced blood pressure, reduced tiredness, reduced cravings and improved healing. Hugs can also reduce pain by increasing circulation to the soft tissues. But hugs also help our mental health. They build feelings of trust and self-esteem, reduce feelings of isolation, loneliness and and anger. So, go and hug (safely in the current climate!) your family and friends because it’s good for your health!
