Would you know the signs of dehydration? Why should you know them? Water is key to survival. You can last 3-4 weeks without food, but only 3-4 days without water. The current need to wear masks is accelerating the body’s risk of dehydration, because we are less likely to drink enough, together with the increasing temperatures as we head towards summer. By keeping hydrated you are helping the body keep cool, reduce constipation, muscles and joints work at their optimum levels, keep kidneys/heart/brain/liver and other organs working effectively. The easiest indicator of how hydrated you are is the colour of your urine. The darker it is the more dehydrated you are. It should be a light straw colour. Other symptoms of dehydration include: dry mouth, fatigue, bad breath, confusion, dizziness, feeling faint, even palpitations. It is recommended you should drink 6-8 glasses of water per day although some factors such as medication, exercise, and environmental temperature may affect this.
