Immunity boosting

Picture

Our immune system prevents the body from attacks from bacteria, viruses, parasites and other unhealthy pathogens (things that cause illness/disease).

When the immune system, consisting of cells, organs, tissues, recognises an unwelcome attack, it mounts an immune response. The main cells involved in mounting the immune response are: white blood cells, phagocytes and lymphocytes.

White blood cells are stored in a number of organs, including the thymus, spleen, bone marrow and lymph nodes. White blood cells constantly travel around the body until they find a pathogen whereby they multiply and send out signals to other cells to do the same, helping to isolate and destroy the pathogen.
Phagocytes consist of neutrophils (attack bacteria), monocytes, macrophages (remove dead cells), and mast cells (heal wounds).

Lymphocytes remember previous pathogens so recognise them if they come back to infect the body. There are 2 types, both of which start out in the bone marrow. B lymphocytes stay in the bone marrow and produce antibodies. T lymphocytes move to the thymus and destroy infected cells.

Everyone’s immune system is different but generally gets stronger during adulthood due to being exposed to more pathogens. Once an antibody has been produced, the body stores a copy, so when the same infection occurs, it can fight it quicker and more effectively.

Reflexology helps to support the immune system by treating all the organs and systems, stimulating the circulation system, increasing the body’s ability to protect itself.

Stress can affect the body’s immune system. Reflexology helps to reduce stress and tension, improving blood and lymph circulation as well as release of toxins from the body.

Now is the time to think about boosting your immune system. We are heading into colds and flu season, covid is still around, shingles etc, none of which is a pleasant experience.
