7/8/2021 0 Comments LipoedemaLipoedema is different to lymphoedema because, instead of an accumulation of fluid in the tissues, there is an abnormal build up of fat in certain areas. Lipoedema is often misdiagnosed for lymphoedema.
Lipoedema most commonly (but not exclusively) occurs in women. The fat accumulates in the lower body, starting just below the waist, but do not build up in the ankles in feet. Unlike normal fat build up, lipoedema areas are painful to the touch, and bruise easily. Whilst the cause is largely unknown, it is considered to be linked to female hormonal changes. It commonly occurs at puberty, after pregnancy, or around the menopause. Lipoedema is a progressive condition and gradually the fat cells become larger in size and absorb more and more fluid. Normally excess fluid will be removed through the blood and lymphatic systems, but they become sluggish in people with lipoedema. Gravity also encourages fluid to collect in the lower limbs. Reflexology can help with the discomfort of lipoedema by stimulating the blood circulation and lymphatic drainage system. It cannot cure the condition, but can alleviate some of the symptoms. I have been nursing for over 25 years and have seen the physical and emotional effects of this condition. Home visits are available if you have difficulty getting out and about, and up stairs.
