Lymphoedema is a chronic condition where fluid builds up in the tissues when the lymphatic system is not working effectively. The lymphatic system is part of the immune system. It carries waste products, bacteria and viruses in fluid to the lymph nodes which filter out the waste from the body. Lymphoedema can occur where there is a blockage or damage in the lymph nodes. This can be as a result of cancer treatment but often the cause is unknown. Lymphoedema symptoms include swelling, which can be in any part of the body, but most commonly occurs in the legs and arms. Lymphoedema must be diagnosed by a doctor following specific tests. It can be controlled through compression bandaging, weight control, exercise, massage. Reflexology can help to stimulate the lymphatic reflexes to improve the lymphatic system. Whilst reflexology cannot cure lymphoedema, it can help to manage symptoms. It will take several appointments to get symptoms under control, and then maintenance treatments thereafter. I have been a nurse for over 25 years and understand how lymphoedema can affect you physically and emotionally.
