Reflexology is NOT recommended before 12 weeks of pregnancy as this is a vulnerable time when the body is settling down. Whilst there is no evidence that reflexology is linked to miscarriage, the body needs to have time to work naturally. Reflexology between 12-36 weeks can help with many symptoms including lower back pain, sciatica, heartburn, ankle swelling, high blood pressure, constipation, and insomnia (this list is not exhaustive). Reflexology can also help with reducing feelings of stress or anxiety which can develop during pregnancy. Reflexology involves lying on my couch, supported by pillows, towels, blankets, whatever you need to be supported and comfortable. By applying pressure to specific areas on the feet the body identifies where there are imbalances and starts to rebalance itself. This process creates a sense of deep relaxation during the treatment which helps you feel re-energised, calm and focused. During the treatment you may feel your baby become very active or even settle, in response to the effects going on in your body.
