21/8/2021 0 Comments Rheumatoid ArthritisRheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition which attacks joints, particularly those in the knees, hands and wrists. The lining of the joints become inflamed causing pain and deformity to the joints.
But rheumatoid arthritis can also affect other organs including eyes, heart and lungs. You may have symptoms daily but also get flare ups when the symptoms are worse. Symptoms include: pain and stiffness in joints, weight loss, fatigue and weakness. Rheumatoid arthritis can occur at any age, but as we get older the risk increases, and is more common in women. It is also more likely where there is a family trait. Smoking and obesity are also contributing factors. Rheumatoid arthritis is managed through medication but keeping active will also help. A study by Bakir and others in 2018 showed that reflexology helped reduced pain and improved sleep quality. Reflexology helps the body release chemicals which help to lessen pain, but also reduce inflammation. As a nurse, I am very aware of how rheumatoid arthritis can affect your quality of life, both physically and mentally.
