It is well-known that touch helps to relieve pain. How often do you bang your elbow and immediately rub it better, rub your temples when you have a headache, or rub your child’s knee when they fall over? When someone is upset, do you give them a hug, or hold their hand, or put your hand on their shoulder? These are all examples of therapeutic touch. In all my years of nursing, I am very aware of how important touch is. Massage has a long tradition, dating back to the Romans, using it as a form of rehabilitation of their soldiers. The term “massage” comes from the Greek “masso” meaning “to knead”. Aromatherapy uses aromatic essential oils, derived from specific parts of plants, to provide healing. Aromatherapy is administered through massage and/or inhalation primarily. It has been used since Ancient Egyptian times but was made into a healing discipline in the 1930s by Dr Rene Maurice Gattefosse. The aim of aromatherapy is to produce physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing. The essential oils themselves are chosen for their sedative, stimulating or refreshing properties. Aromatherapy is not about dealing with disease, but does aim to release balance and wellbeing in the body. When discussing what you are looking to achieve from your session, it is necessaryto discuss all your symptoms, possible causes, and what sort of scents you find pleasurable. Although I administer aromatherapy through massage, you will still inhale the essential oils which are being massaged into your skin. If you do not find certain scents pleasant, you will not experience deep relaxation. Aromatherapy massage is not about whether the massage is “hard”, “medium” or “soft”. These relate to Swedish massage and other forms of massage. Aromatherapy massage is a relaxing, gentle massage which is about warming up the skin and muscles, bringing the blood vessels to the surface on the skin. The essential oils then absorb into the bloodstream, to be transported around the body to work where they are needed. Starting today until 10th March I have an introductory offer.
