What is the difference between reflexology, massage, acupressure/acupuncture?

Picture

Another question I’m frequently asked, usually before a client commits to reflexology, is what is the difference between reflexology and foot massage, or the difference between reflexology and acupressure?

Massage uses a combination of various techniques, including tapping, cupping, friction, and stroking, which helps to relax the muscles. Reflexology is the use of thumb and fingers to apply pressure to specific points on the feet that correspond to organs in the body through nerve stimulation and unblocking energy channels. It may be argued that massage works from the outside in, whereas reflexology works from the inside out.

Acupressure and acupuncture (use of fine needles) are more closely related to reflexology as they all use stimulation of specific points to influence flow of energy in the body. However, in reflexology the points are neatly arranged in the form of the body on feet and hands, whereas acupressure (no needles) and acupuncture use over 800 points found along meridian points which run the entire length of the body.

I am currently training in acupressure as well as aromatherapy massage so these will be offered in the new year.
