Various pieces of research show that bergamot, clary sage, frankincense, lavender, neroli, rose, and ylang ylang essential oils can be very useful. Aromatherapy works by stimulating the sense of smell by the olfactory system which is close to the brain. This links closely with the limbic system which controls our emotions. As the scents smell pleasant we can feel calmer, happier, and therefore less stressed. Stress is a common factor in high blood pressure. Aromatherapy can also involve gentle massage which reduces tension in the muscles. This also makes you feel relaxed and less stressed.
