31/7/2023 0 Comments I've been nominated for an awardSometimes we don’t shout about our own achievements, but today I am going to do just that!
I am so excited to let you know what popped into my email inbox at the end of last week…….I’ve been nominated for a Woman Who Achieves award!! Little did I know when I left my 30 year nursing career after becoming very stressed, burnt out and perimenopausal (but didn’t realise it) that I would have the strength and determination to set up my own business, focusing on women experiencing similar difficulties. My timing wasn’t the best, leaving a safe job in September 2020, to focus on developing my reflexology practice. Due to lockdowns 2 and 3, I could barely work 1 month out of my first 6 months, so back to nursing and covid testing around the country I went. This challenge did not deter me, quite the opposite in fact, and I focused on planning what I wanted to achieve when the time came to be able to re-open. I learnt some basics about marketing my business, studied more reflexology, and planned how to move my business forward. Fast forward a further 2 years, and I have a wonderful client base, who literally inspire me everyday with challenges they overcome. I feel part of their family, and they are part of mine. I have never once regretted working for myself. I know it can be challenging, even lonely at times, but getting a message that I have been nominated for an award has been the icing on the cake. I will continue to work to my absolute best and I hope that I can help you too.

Yesterday I had a lovely time with my son and friends that we first got to know as my husband’s colleagues, many many years ago. Unfortunately my husband is currently doing some work in Poland so couldn’t be there.
As I was driving up to Derby, slowed down by roadworks, closed roads, traffic etc, I thought how lucky I have been to take risks and opportunities that brought me out of my comfort zone, in order to do this. Let me explain….. I set my reflexology business up in September 2020, just before lockdowns 2 and 3 (yep not the best timing ever!) I had 30 years of nursing behind me so I, rather nervously, joined a local nursing agency to do covid testing. Little did I know that this meant I was going to end up travelling around the country, on my own. I only drove locally, to places I knew, that were probably a maximum hour away. I didn’t particularly like motorways either. Anyway, I pulled up my big girls’ pants and drove over 3 hours to Pembrokeshire (never been there before), then Manchester, Stoke, north Wales, and others. It helped me to stay solvent, and I met fantastic people. This helped me see that getting out of my comfort zone opens up amazing experiences. Since then, I’m happy driving to and from Chichester where my son is at uni, I went to Suffolk when my husband was working there, I often help drive the long journey up to Scotland, and yesterday I went to Derby. So, imagine if you came out of your comfort zone and tried reflexology with me? You will start to rebalance your body and feel relaxed, and rejuvenated. Reflexology reduces stress, anxiety, depression, blood pressure, pain levels, mood swings, and improves sleep, immunity and digestion. What enters your head when someone says they feel like they are on cloud 9? Ecstatically happy? Not a care in the world? No pain? No anxiety? Anything else?
- Reflexology is based on the principle that reflexes (areas) on the feet, hands and other parts of the body, relate to organs, glands, muscles, and systems in the body. - Pressure on these points help the body rebalance by normalising the function of these structures, stimulating the body’s healing process, and helping to achieve physical and emotional well-being. You will feel deeply relaxed yet rejuvenated, as if you are floating on air! - Reflexology is an holistic non-invasive therapy, looking at the person as a whole. After more than 30 years of nursing, I have a deep understanding of the connection of structures and systems within the body. Whilst you may experience a particular symptom, there may be a number of underlying imbalances which, together, produce that symptom. - I have a very strong belief that reflexology has a very important place in our 21st century lifestyles. Helping muscles and circulation in sedentary lifestyles, calming the nervous systems in anxiety, and helping to remove toxins from the body. - Another interesting fact when looking at the feet is that your right foot maps the right side of the body and left foot reflects the left side. - Reflexologists feel crystals in the areas that correspond to the reflex that is imbalanced. The crystals are made up of calcium or uric acid building up in the nerve endings in the feet. Applying pressure to these crystals helps them to break up, so they can be carried away by the bloodstream. I recommend you drink plenty of water after your treatment to help flush these toxins away. 31/7/2023 0 Comments From stressed to sublimeRecently I saw a client that I had not seen for a few months. She has been very busy personally and professionally, and making time for herself was put on the back burner.
I was delighted when she booked in for a reflexology session, but was unhappy that she had been experiencing lots of overwhelm, paranoia, and other perimenopausal symptoms. Her colleague even told her to “go and get your feet done! You’re so much better when you get your feet done”! I could see a big difference straight after this first session back. Reflexology helps to wake up all the systems in the body, by stimulating the nerve endings in the feet, helping to rebalance itself. As well as helping to reduce symptoms of perimenopause, you will benefit from better sleep, fewer aches and pains, better immunity, improved mood, lower blood pressure, better digestion, and so much more. Does my client’s situation sound familiar? Do you want to go from stressed to sublime? Come and have an hour of complete relaxation! 31/7/2023 0 Comments InsomniaAre you feeling tired and fatigued? Are you struggling to get a good night’s sleep? Or do you sleep solidly but still not feel refreshed?
How would you rate your sleep quality on a scale of 1 (bad) to 10 (amazing)? Prolonged insomnia affects our immunity, raises blood pressure and heart rate, alters our bowel pattern, increases anxiety and depression. Our bodies will usually rebalance and rejuvenate during sleep, so if that is not happening our bodies and minds suffer. Reflexology creates a feeling of deep relaxation during the session, but my clients often tell me how well they sleep that night, and often for a few nights afterwards. Reflexology helps to reduce stress and anxiety, which are common triggers for insomnia. It also helps other sleep-depriving causes such as pain, hot flushes, headaches, general illness, fatigue. By working specific points and areas on your feet, I can help with melatonin levels. These regulate your body’s natural circadian rhythm, helping you sleep at night. Unlike sleeping pills or over the counter “natural remedies”, reflexology does not cause any “hangover” effects, and can actually make you feel more energised, focused and motivated. 31/7/2023 0 Comments Turning you from meh to marvellousI am going to ask you one simple question!
Well, the question may be simple, but answering it may be more difficult! But take your time, make yourself a cuppa, and allow yourself the space to answer the question honestly. Are you happy with how you are feeling right now? If you answered “yes” I am really happy for you, and thank you for stopping by and giving up a few minutes to think about it. If you answered “no” then those few minutes could be the best few minutes you’ve spent for a long time! Often we don’t feel happy because we are going through a period of stress, or we are in pain, can’t get a good night’s sleep, feel anxious, to name a few. Is this sounding familiar? (Oops second question there ) I can help you go from feeling meh to marvellous! I apply gentle pressure to specific areas on the feet which correspond to different areas of the body. The pressure stimulates and unblocks nerve pathways, helping rebalance the hormone and lymphatic systems, as well as improving blood circulation. This helps to induce a state of calm throughout your body and mind, leaving you feel relaxed, less stressed and anxious. As you will see from my testimonials many clients actually fall asleep during the treatment. Having been a nurse for over 30 years, I appreciate the importance of taking care of our health, both physically and mentally. 3/6/2023 0 Comments StressI think we all know that prolonged stress is not good for our health, but do you know why and what you can do about it?
Stress will differ from person to person, but the effect is the same. Stress triggers our “fight-flight-freeze” response which is our autonomic response where the body decides if it is going to fight or escape the situation, or freeze. Stress causes physical symptoms such as: palpitations, sweating, dry mouth, breathlessness, altered bowel habits, muscle tension, altered sleep habits, headaches, to name a few. Stress also causes mental symptoms such as: feeling tearful and helpless, being withdrawn, anxious, impatient, easily aggravated and irritated, low self-esteem, difficulty thinking clearly, to name a few. Our nervous system is made up of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. It is the sympathetic nervous system which responds to stimuli and prepares the body to fight or run away. It will speed up certain systems in the body such as muscle response, releasing adrenaline, increasing heart rate and dilating the pupils. It also slows down systems that are not needed at that time such as the digestive system and production of saliva. This puts tremendous stress and tension on the body. The parasympathetic nervous system has the opposite effect but only works effectively when the body is not under stress. It slows down the heart rate, constricts the pupils, speeds up the digestive system, and has no effect on the adrenal glands. It is only when the body is in a relaxed state that it can restore balance and heal itself. This is where reflexology comes in. Reflexology uses specific points on the feet, known as reflexes, to create a sense of calm, shifting your body from the sympathetic to the parasympathetic nervous system. If you recognise any of the above symptoms of stress in you, be kind to yourself and allow me to flick the switch to your calmer you. Stress can have significant long term effects so invest in your future and book reflexology with me now. Each session lasts an hour and costs £40. This is a fantastic investment in you! 3/6/2023 0 Comments CirculationDo you notice your feet swelling up when you’ve been sat for a while? Maybe when you’ve been out for a meal, or on a longish flight?
This occurs because your blood circulation hasn’t been energised for a while. Blood circulated to every cell in your body, carrying oxygen and nutrients to help them work, as well as removing waste products produced by the cells, and helping our lymphatic system fight infections. In fact we have more than 60,000 miles of blood vessels!! Reflexology promotes effective blood circulation, helping reduce swelling, increase the flow of oxygen and nutrients around the body, and removal of toxins. It also helps to get blood pressure to a more normal level. I have often checked client’s blood pressure before and after a session to show the difference reflexology makes. If you experience swollen feet or ankles, high blood pressure, or are generally feeling sluggish, feel free to contact me for a chat to see how reflexology can help you. 3/6/2023 0 Comments What is holistic medicine? We often hear the term “holistic medicine” or even “holistic energy medicine” but what do these terms actually mean?
The word “holistic” means “whole”, “energy” refers to “life”, and “medicine” means to “heal”. Put them together and you get “whole life healing”. As an holistic therapist I work on your body’s energy flows throughout your whole body to help you heal. Our body’s energy is made up of body, mind and spirit. To achieve true wellness involves me balancing all of these. When all the systems are working at their optimum level you feel full of energy, relaxed and healthy. You will notice better sleep, improved immunity, less stress, improved mood, reduced pain. 3/6/2023 0 Comments Why do I do what I do?Why do you do the job that you do? Is it because you love creativity? Or knowing exactly what is going to happen every day? Or the financial reward? Or something else?
For me, it is definitely “something else”! I love helping people to feel better physically, mentally and emotionally. I am empathetic which is why I went into nursing at the tender age of 19. Last week I had 2 stand out moments that totally reminded me that I’m doing a good job. The first was my lady with lymphoedema who I have worked with since September last year and reduced her legs by around 4 cm. She went to her appointment at the lymphoedema clinic and were amazed at the difference. She has had to have new compression stockings because her current ones are now too big. She was told “keep doing the reflexology because it’s working”! Another client with a degenerative condition affecting the nerves in his feet, affecting the shape and sensitivity, and causing balance problems. He reported that he noticed his balance was better because he could feel his feet connecting with the floor for the first time in years. I loved seeing how thrilled and excited they were at the difference in their symptoms. I have to admit to feeling quite choked up. These were physical conditions, but I have achieved similar results with anxiety and depression symptoms in clients. The results don’t happen overnight, they need working on regularly, but even from the first treatment clients often report improved sleep, or slightly less pain, or calmer digestive system. 3/6/2023 0 Comments Diverticular diseaseHave you been diagnosed with diverticular disease? Or had flare ups of diverticulitis? Reflexology may be able to help regulate your bowel function.
Diverticular disease is an umbrella term covering diverticulosis (formation of pouches in the colon) and diverticulitis (when the pouches become swollen). Whilst the exact cause is not known, it has a higher incidence in those who do not have enough fibre in their diet. This leads to constipation, straining whilst having a bowel movement and increased chance of bacteria entering the pouches. Older people are more at risk of diverticular disease, with approximately 50% of 60-80 year olds having it. Diverticulosis and diverticulitis have different symptoms. Diverticulosis generally have no symptoms although some people will report some bleeding or bloating. Diverticulitis symptoms include abdominal pain which can be severe, temperature, vomiting, and altered bowel movement. Reflexology involves applying pressure to specific areas on the feet or hands which correspond to specific areas in the body. These stimulate nerve endings which send messages to the brain and organs to help them rebalance themselves. Reflexology can help with diverticular disease by helping to regulate the muscles in the walls of the intestine, regulate fluid absorption, and elimination of toxins. It also improves blood circulation to keep the bowel healthy, as well as boosting immunity to help the body fight infection. As a nurse for over 25 years, as well as having had family members experience the discomfort of diverticulitis, I know how debilitating living with diverticular disease can be. 3/6/2023 0 Comments RelaxationIt is fair to say that life goes through fast-paced, stressful episodes, feeling like you are spinning too many plates at the same time. How do you cope? Do you cope?!
Massage is well-known to relax the body and stimulate production of serotonin (feel-good hormone) but aromatherapy adds in the power of essential oils to help the body rebalance at a cellular level. Research carried out in 2015, showed that therapeutic massage was shown to help reduce symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in professions that are exposed to challenging situations, such as fire fighters, first responders, and nurses. Research carried out in 2016 shows that office workers are more prone to neck, shoulder and back problems. Sitting down for long periods affects blood circulation and digestion. Even 20 minutes of massage can improve all of these symptoms. Essential oils can work their magic too! Complementary therapy, such as aromatherapy, will help to prevent many problems that you may experience through your work. Work is important but so is your health. 3/6/2023 1 Comment High blood pressureEssential oils can be useful in helping to lower high blood pressure. I would firstly say that it should not be used instead of conventional medication which has been prescribed by your doctor. But they can help to support/complement your treatment.
Various pieces of research show that bergamot, clary sage, frankincense, lavender, neroli, rose, and ylang ylang essential oils can be very useful. Aromatherapy works by stimulating the sense of smell by the olfactory system which is close to the brain. This links closely with the limbic system which controls our emotions. As the scents smell pleasant we can feel calmer, happier, and therefore less stressed. Stress is a common factor in high blood pressure. Aromatherapy can also involve gentle massage which reduces tension in the muscles. This also makes you feel relaxed and less stressed. As you have seen from this week’s posts, gut health is so important to our health generally. Reflexology helps with metabolism, immunity and gut motility but I would not be a very good therapist if I did not provide information to help between sessions.
Understanding the symptoms of an unhealthy gut will help you make decisions about changes in your diet or lifestyle. Imbalances to the “good bacteria” can lead to nausea, vomiting, bloating, constipation, diarrhoea. Other imbalances lead to indigestion and heartburn, poor sleep, weight gain or weight loss (without trying), eczema or food intolerances. There are many natural ways to help maintain a healthy digestive system. Reducing stress can help enormously. Stress increases the body’s inflammatory response causing greater chance of stomach ulcers, autoimmune conditions, general infections. Whilst it is easy for me to say that you need to reduce stress, I appreciate it is not always possible. So, in addition to regular reflexology sessions, decreasing your caffeine intake, yoga, mindfulness, essential oils such as lavender can help. Getting a good night’s sleep can also help. Switching off phones/tablets/tv an hour before bed can help the brain switch off. Get a nighttime routine established. Warm bath, subdued lighting, good book, whatever helps to prepare your body for sleep. Again, lavender oil/pillow mist can help send you to the land of nod. Taking a probiotic and pre-biotic supplement will help boost the good bacteria. Avoiding high sugar and processed foods in your diet will also help. The biggest piece of advice I would also give is to drink plenty of water. Keeping hydrated will help avoid constipation. The body needs fluid to work effectively. The body is made up of approximately 60% water. Drinking 2 litres a day is recommended but you need to add extra during hot weather, after exercise, or if you have an infection. We all know about eating a balanced diet but I’m not a nutritionist! However, I hope these tips will help. 3/6/2023 0 Comments InsomniaWe all go through periods of difficulty sleeping for so many reasons (stress, anxiety, pain, perimenopause etc) but, apart from feeling tired, it can have longer-term effects on our health.
Prolonged insomnia affects our immunity, raises blood pressure and heart rate, alters our bowel pattern, increases anxiety and depression. Our bodies will usually rebalance and rejuvenate during sleep, so if that is not happening our bodies and minds suffer. Aromatherapy can be very useful through inhalation of therapeutic essential oils, as well as the effect of massage releasing tension from the body. Most of us think of lavender and chamomile if we have trouble sleeping but other oils such as ylang ylang, peppermint, bergamot, sandalwood, clary sage, marjoram, vet over and cedar wood are helpful, depending on the cause of insomnia. If this resonates with you, feel free to get in touch. I am currently taking FEMALE clients only, or male relatives of current clients. 3/6/2023 0 Comments Irritable bowel syndromeIrritable bowel syndrome (IBS)is a chronic condition which flares up causing great discomfort with a number of symptoms.
The most common symptoms include: constipation, diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, excess gas, urgency, bloating and passing mucus. Symptoms may be worse after eating or you may experience a flare up lasting for a few days before symptoms ease or go completely. Certain food and drinks such as milk, alcohol, chocolate, spices can aggravate symptoms. Foods and supplements such as increased fibre and probiotics such as live natural yoghurt can help. It is worth keeping a food diary to see if there is a pattern to symptoms following certain foods. IBS is often triggered by stress. Whilst reflexology can help with metabolism and improving gut movements, it also has a helpful effect on stress reduction. 3/6/2023 0 Comments Muscular aches and painsMany of us experience aches and pains, but do you suffer on a daily or almost daily basis?
Pain can be very debilitating mentally, as well as physically, and can come in many forms as well as in any part of the body because most are caused by muscular problems. Aromatherapy is the therapeutic use of essential oils by inhaling or through the skin. Olfactory stimulation, ie sense of smell, can help reduce pain, lower heart rate, lower blood pressure, and bring clarity to brain function. Aromatherapy improves sleep, reduces stress and anxiety, which help to relax muscles which often cause the muscular aches and pains. This, in turn, reduces headaches, menstrual cramps, joint aches, back pain. Add in the massage element the muscles relax further, small blood vessels come up to the skin surface allowing the therapeutic essential oils to be absorbed and transported to where they are needed. If this resonates with you, feel free to get in touch. I am currently taking FEMALE clients only, or male relatives of current clients. 3/6/2023 0 Comments Gut healthThis week I will be focusing on your gut….why it needs to be healthy and what can go wrong, as well as how reflexology can help.
So, what is gut health and why is it important? The digestive system contains many types of bacteria to help with the function of the gut. When these are correctly balanced and working efficiently the gut is considered healthy. Unfortunately the balance can be easily upset due to poor diet, infection, medication, stress or chronic conditions. A healthy digestive system is important because it breaks down the food we eat into simple nutrients which enter the bloodstream and get carried to where they can be used. The bacteria fight off infections and viruses keeping us feeling well. The gut also has a nerve supply which communicates with the brain to regulate hormones and general well-being. I’m sure we have all experienced an unbalanced digestive system. Symptoms can include: heartburn, indigestion, bloating, nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhoea, stomach cramps, to name a few. The type of food and the way it is prepared is often key to general good health. But you may have allergies or sensitivities which may also affect what you are able to eat, for which you would require specific professional advice. Reflexology can really help settle and rebalance the digestive system. It works to settle the parasympathetic nervous system easing stress and anxiety which in turn calms the stomach and intestines. Reflexology also encourages the peristalsis (muscular wave) in the gut which helps to reduce bloating and constipation. It is very common for the gut to gurgle during a treatment! As a nurse for over 25 years, I’m pretty obsessed by the gut and bowels generally! 3/6/2023 0 Comments Digestive problemsDo you experience problems with your digestive system? Have you been diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), suffer constipation or diarrhoea, heartburn, flatulence, nausea, or loss of appetite?
What is your go-to remedy? Would you consider aromatherapy? Our gut has a huge impact on our overall well-being. We often refer to our digestive system as our second brain because, although it won’t sort out our accounts or decide what to cook for dinner , it does use the same chemicals as the brain to work out when it is not working properly. As soon as our gut is not working efficiently we can feel sluggish, lethargic, experience headaches, feel anxious, poor sleep, even our pain levels can increase. Many of our gut imbalances are caused by stress. Of course, certain foods can affect our digestive enzymes, but stress can cause the the body to produce more cortisol. The increased level of cortisol causes the blood circulation to divert away from the gut to the muscles (ready for fight or flight response), reduces a chemical which protects the stomach lining from the acid (increasing chance of stomach ulcers developing), slows down digestion (constipation) or a sudden need to evacuate (diarrhoea) meaning you are not absorbing nutrients sufficiently, and because 70% of your immunity is regulated by the gut you are more likely to succumb to infections. Aromatherapy works in 2 main ways: through the use of specific combinations of essential oils which, by inhaling, works on the brain to balance the digestive system, and by massage which relaxes stress from the body and allows the essential oils to absorb through the skin into the bloodstream and get carried to the gut to rebalance itself. I am currently taking FEMALE clients only, or male relatives of current clients. 3/6/2023 0 Comments Headaches/migraineI think we all agree that headaches can be incredibly disruptive, and migraines can completely incapacitate you. Medication can help to a point, but does not always take the pain away.
Headache and migraine may not always have an obvious trigger, but common triggers include dehydration, stress, poor sleep, and anxiety. Conventional medicine can be supported through the use of aromatherapy. The use of essential oils have been documented for thousands of years, and have been shown to be useful in relieving stress and pain. There is a complex relationship between scents and the brain, and the oils are used with care because strong scents could actually trigger headache and migraine. A qualified aromatherapist, like myself, are trained to dilute specific essential oils to calm the stress and reduce symptoms. Commonly used essential oils include: - Lavender which reduces stress and anxiety. A few drops can be put into boiling water and steam inhaled for around 15 minutes. - Peppermint helps relax muscles. Tension in the neck and shoulders can cause headaches. Menthol in the mint also numbs pain triggered in the nervous system. - Rosemary helps reduce anxiety. It improves circulation which can help remove toxins and supply nutrients and oxygen, thereby reducing symptoms. As well as inhaling the essential oils, you may experience benefit from a neck/back/shoulders massage using the essential oils. Massage helps to reduce tension in the muscles which can cause headaches. Reflexology is based on the theory that pressing specific points on the feet create a response in the corresponding part of the body.
There are over 7,000 nerve endings in the feet which connect to networks of nerves in the body and brain. The brain controls all the systems in the body, and stimulating the nerves sends messages to the brain to stimulate or suppress functions to bring the body back into balance. The left foot relates to the left side of the body, and the right foot relates to that side of the body. Therefore, by working both feet I am balancing the entire body as a whole. Imbalance caused by stress, poor sleep, poor diet, environmental factors, causes toxins to build up in the body causing blockages in the energy pathways, lymphatic system, slows down circulation, which can lead to disease. Reflexology stimulates the central nervous system, unblocks the energy channels, and restores balance in the body. Reflexology effectively helps the body to heal itself. Each person will get a different experience from reflexology because it depends on what your body needs to rebalance itself. The most common effects are feeling more relaxed and better sleep. For others they may notice less pain, reduced swelling in feet, calmer digestive system, better focus, less painful periods, fewer hot flushes, less anxiety, more energy, and so much more. If you have been feeling stressed or going through bereavement, reflexology may release emotions such as tearfulness or anger, which have been pent up inside. Although reflexology is wonderful as a one-off treatment for relaxation and a sense of general well-being, if you would like help with specific concerns then I would recommend investing in regular treatments. 3/6/2023 0 Comments Ylang YlangYlang ylang is popular in scented candles and luxury toiletries, but it also has therapeutic properties.
