Stress will differ from person to person, but the effect is the same. Stress triggers our “fight-flight-freeze” response which is our autonomic response where the body decides if it is going to fight or escape the situation, or freeze. Stress causes physical symptoms such as: palpitations, sweating, dry mouth, breathlessness, altered bowel habits, muscle tension, altered sleep habits, headaches, to name a few. Stress also causes mental symptoms such as: feeling tearful and helpless, being withdrawn, anxious, impatient, easily aggravated and irritated, low self-esteem, difficulty thinking clearly, to name a few. Our nervous system is made up of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. It is the sympathetic nervous system which responds to stimuli and prepares the body to fight or run away. It will speed up certain systems in the body such as muscle response, releasing adrenaline, increasing heart rate and dilating the pupils. It also slows down systems that are not needed at that time such as the digestive system and production of saliva. This puts tremendous stress and tension on the body. The parasympathetic nervous system has the opposite effect but only works effectively when the body is not under stress. It slows down the heart rate, constricts the pupils, speeds up the digestive system, and has no effect on the adrenal glands. It is only when the body is in a relaxed state that it can restore balance and heal itself. This is where reflexology comes in. Reflexology uses specific points on the feet, known as reflexes, to create a sense of calm, shifting your body from the sympathetic to the parasympathetic nervous system. If you recognise any of the above symptoms of stress in you, be kind to yourself and allow me to flick the switch to your calmer you. Stress can have significant long term effects so invest in your future and book reflexology with me now. Each session lasts an hour and costs £40. This is a fantastic investment in you!
