3/6/2023 0 Comments Reservation: Table for oneWe all lead busy lives with varying stresses. Therefore it is important to take time for yourself, to strengthen your body and mind to cope with these stresses.
An aromatherapy massage is one way of investing in yourself. The process of massaging skin and muscles causes the blood vessels to come up to the surface of the skin, making the essential oils absorb easily and be transported around the body. Aromatherapy also works by inhaling the scents of the essential oils. The olfactory system (sense of smell) is closely linked to the limbic system in the brain which controls our emotions. This also helps us to feel happier and more relaxed. So, book your “table for one” now

3/6/2023 0 Comments Pineal glandThe pineal gland is one of my “favourites” and I think is quite underestimated.
Do you have difficulty sleeping? You may not be producing sufficient melatonin. The pineal gland in the brain produces melatonin, helping the brain to prepare for sleep. Melatonin has 2 uses: - [ ] Managing the circadian rhythm - [ ] Physical preparation for sleep The circadian rhythm is the method that the body uses to adjust to day and night cycles. It is the darkness which activates melatonin production by the pineal gland. The pineal gland detects light from both eyes, via the hypothalamus. Melatonin works by:
Reflexology helps the pineal gland to work at its optimum level to help with sleep. However, melatonin alone will not produce a good quality of sleep. Reflexology can help reduce stress, blood pressure, balance hormones and body temperature. During a treatment, deep relaxation is achieved and clients often fall asleep as a result. 3/6/2023 0 Comments PeppermintMost of us have heard of peppermint and you may have used it to settle your digestive system.
But peppermint has many uses including: painkilling, antiseptic, stimulating, as well as decongestant properties. Therefore it is used, amongst others, for: - [ ] Nausea, flatulence, colic, indigestion - [ ] Headaches and migraines - [ ] Colds and flu, fevers, sinusitis - [ ] Inflammation - [ ] Arthritis - [ ] Asthma, bronchitis - [ ] Mosquito repellent - [ ] Painful periods It cannot be used with homeopathic remedies. It should not be used near bedtime because it stimulates therefore causes insomnia. 3/6/2023 0 Comments Pituitary glandThe pituitary gland is an absolute powerhouse in the world of glands and hormones!
It is often referred to as the “Master Gland” and it controls all of the glands and their associated bodily functions in the body. It is only the size of a pea! The pituitary gland helps to regulate metabolism, blood pressure, blood sugar, cortisol, sex hormones, growth hormone. This point in reflexology is very powerful, helping to control fever, reduce dizziness, reduce muscle pains, hormonal imbalances to name a few. However you are feeling, what ever conditions you are experiencing, it is likely that your pituitary gland is involved, and needs re-tuning! That’s where reflexology comes in. 3/6/2023 0 Comments LemonMost of us have heard of lemon and you may have used it for cleaning, or popping in tea.
But lemon essential oil has many uses including: antiseptic, tonic, astringent, antacid, diuretic, emollient, laxative, and hypotension properties. Therefore it is used, amongst others, for: - [ ] Skin problems, acne, greasy skin, corns, warts, veruccas - [ ] Digestive problems, - [ ] Colds and flu, fevers, sinusitis - [ ] Lowering blood pressure - [ ] Arthritis - [ ] Asthma, bronchitis - [ ] Liver purifier - [ ] Insect repellent It is recommended to avoid the sun and sun beds for 6-8 hours after use. 3/6/2023 0 Comments Thymus glandYou may not have heard about the thymus gland but it has a powerful influence on our immune system.
You may notice that if you are going through a period of stress you pick up whatever virus or bug is going around. This is because the thymus gland, which is involved in sending out antibodies, actually shrinks under stress, therefore fewer antibodies are released. Interestingly the thymus gland starts producing antibodies before we are born and has produced all we need by the time we reach puberty. After puberty it gradually shrinks and the lymphatic system works hard to continue the fight against infections. Reflexology is a great way to support your immune system, balancing your entire lymphatic system. If you are going through a stressful time, or finding your immune system is not as efficient as it used to be, get in touch and book your reflexology session now. 3/6/2023 0 Comments LavenderLavender has an ancient history of use, believed to have been used medicinally for over 2500 years. The Romans used lavender to heal battle wounds.
Many of us reach for lavender products when we can’t sleep, but did you know it has many other uses? Lavender essential oil, with its light floral scent, is highly antiseptic, analgesic, anti-rheumatic, anti-depressant, anti-viral, and decongestant. Therefore it is used, amongst others, for: - [ ] Flu - [ ] Asthma and respiratory problems - [ ] Stress - [ ] Acne, eczema, ulcers, wounds, dermatitis, sunburn, burns, skin infections - [ ] Headaches - [ ] Rheumatism and arthritis - [ ] Muscular aches and pains - [ ] Insomnia - [ ] High blood pressure Because of the sedative effects of lavender, it is not recommended if you have low blood pressure and should not be used within the 2 weeks prior to surgery with a general anaesthetic. 3/6/2023 0 Comments Solar PlexusReflexology uses specific points (reflexes) on the feet which relate to specific organs in the body.
I am going to look at 5 different “power points” and what they do. I’ve chosen these as they have important roles, but are often points that show imbalance in my clients. Today I am looking at the solar plexus. I have one client who, when I press on this point, always stops talking and feels the need to take in a really deep breath. This is because the solar plexus is a central point for breathing. But firstly, what is the solar plexus and where is it? The solar plexus is found just under the diaphragm and is a network of nerves from the digestive system, liver, kidneys, lungs. It gets its name from its resemblance to sun’s rays. The nerves form part of the sympathetic nervous system, therefore when under stress it can speed up bodily systems and cause feelings of anxiety. One of the systems affected is the respiratory system. When stressed we breathe faster and more shallowly, muscles tighten, heart rate speeds up and blood pressure rises. By pressing the solar plexus reflex, muscles relax, breathing slows and deepens, bodily systems slow to a normal rate, and deep relaxation is achieved. 3/6/2023 0 Comments JuniperIf you enjoy a little gin and tonic on a Saturday night then you will know that it is flavoured with juniper berries.
But juniper is a very useful essential oil, supporting many health benefits. Juniper has antiseptic, painkilling, anti-spasmodic, insecticide and stimulant properties. It is particularly good for cleansing the system, cellulite, hangovers and fluid retention. Therefore it is used, amongst others, for: - [ ] Liver problems - [ ] Urinary infections - [ ] Obesity - [ ] Acne, psoriasis, eczema, ulcers, wounds - [ ] Period pains - [ ] Rheumatism - [ ] Hangovers It cannot be used if you are pregnant or have any kidney problems. 3/6/2023 0 Comments Will reflexology help me?If you are thinking if reflexology would help you, the simple answer is “yes”!
Our bodies are designed to work in a delicate balance but this balance is affected by stress, poor sleep, diet, environmental factors and much more. These create imbalances leading to disease and further stresses within the body. Symptoms you may be experiencing could include: insomnia, aches and pains, headaches, nausea, hormonal problems, digestive problems, low mood, feeling run down, skin problems, leg swelling and many more. Reflexology creates a sense of deep relaxation, allowing the body to heal itself. This leads to feeling rejuvenated, re-energised, better concentration, better mood, improved sleep, boosted immunity, and lower pain levels. So reflexology really is for anyone and everyone, including you! 3/6/2023 0 Comments EucalyptusMost of us have heard of eucalyptus and you may have used cold remedies that contain it.
But eucalyptus has many uses including: antiseptic, painkilling, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, diuretic, insecticide, as well as decongestant properties. Therefore it is used, amongst others, for: - [ ] Migraine - [ ] Cystitis and urinary tract problems - [ ] Coughs - [ ] Sore throat - [ ] Viral infections - [ ] Sprains and strained muscles - [ ] Mosquito repellent - [ ] Skin infections It cannot be used with homeopathic remedies. Reflexology is all about balance.
Whether you have an acute or chronic physical condition, experience long-term depression or anxiety, are going through stress or bereavement, these all create imbalances in the body. Imbalances lead to illness and disease. These can be helped by allowing the body to completely relax, and reflexology does just that. Reflexology will create a sense of deep relaxation allowing the parasympathetic nervous system to do its work. It allows the hormones to level out, and the brain to work out what needs help to heal. Also, as a therapist, I’m in a privileged position to allow you to talk through anything that you want to. It all remains confidential. Studies have shown that physical touch in the form of hugs, holding hands, massage, all reduce stress and boost immunity.
Touch helps us feel loved, supported, included, secure, which all have a positive effect on our emotions, and reduce physical tension. Reflexology is a complementary therapy which uses pressure on specific points on the feet to induce a sense of calm and deep relaxation. During the treatment there is an exchange of energy between you and me. By balancing all the systems in your body, helping them to work efficiently, and restoring depleted energy, you will go away feeling like you’ve had a great big hug! Why not give yourself some love and book a reflexology session? 3/5/2023 0 Comments Chamomile essential oilHave you ever seen a chamomile lawn? It is very pretty, and the daisy-like flowers release a beautiful fragrance.
Chamomile has painkilling, antiseptic, anti-spasmodic, anti-inflammatory, and sedative properties. Therefore it is used, amongst others, for: - [ ] Migraine - [ ] Skin problems - [ ] Stress - [ ] Anxiety - [ ] Insomnia - [ ] Sprains - [ ] Digestive problems - [ ] Irritability - [ ] Menstrual problems It cannot be used during pregnancy. 3/5/2023 0 Comments Bergamot essential oilHave you heard of bergamot? I had seen it on scented candles but didn’t know anything else about it prior to my aromatherapy training.
If you are drawn to citrus scents, you will love bergamot. Bergamot is used for so many conditions and has painkilling, antiseptic, anti-viral, anti-spasmodic and anti-depressant properties. Therefore it is used, amongst others, for: - [ ] Acne - [ ] Tension - [ ] Stress - [ ] Poor appetite - [ ] Depression - [ ] Fever - [ ] Cystitis It is important to avoid sunbathing or using a subbed, because this essential could cause skin pigmentation problems. 3/5/2023 0 Comments Basil essential oilWhat do you use basil for? Decorating your pizza? Or whizzing up some pesto?
Did you know that basil essential oil is widely used in aromatherapy? Its herbaceous, clear sweet aroma is used for so many conditions. Basil has painkilling, antiseptic, expectorant, and anti-depressant properties. Therefore it is used, amongst others, for: - [ ] Migraine - [ ] Mental fatigue - [ ] Poor concentration - [ ] Bronchitis - [ ] Asthma - [ ] Colds - [ ] Digestive problems - [ ] Gout - [ ] Regulating menstrual cycle It cannot be used during pregnancy. I love aromatherapy massage because it’s the essential oils that do the hard work.
I remember having a hot stones massage once, until her pressure got harder and harder which was uncomfortable, and then she literally tickled my feet with the stones, which was equally uncomfortable. With aromatherapy massage, it is a comfortable pressure, designed to warm the skin and muscles, to allow the essential oils to absorb into the bloodstream and carry out their therapeutic benefit. In aromatherapy massage, there is no cupping, or percussion (tapping). Instead it uses lovely effleurage (stroking) techniques and some kneading to get those pesky knots out. 3/5/2023 0 Comments Importance of breathingGenerally we take breathing for granted, after all we’ve been doing it since the moment we were born.
But what happens when the doctor or nurse tells you to “breathe normally”?! I bet you focus on breathing in and out trying to keep it as normal as possible, but making it feel abnormal! What if you focused on your breath in order to feel less stressed and anxious? You can do the following breathing exercises whilst standing, sitting or lying. The important thing is to find somewhere quiet with no distractions. - Breathe in steadily through the nose. Try counting, in your mind, to 3 or 4 slowly. Imagine the air getting deep down in your lungs, and expanding your lungs right into your back ribs. - Breathe out steadily through pursed lips, again to a count to 3-4. - Repeat for 3-5 minutes daily Initially you may find it difficult to breathe in and out to counts of 3 or 4, and that’s fine, but doing this regularly you will notice an improvement. Focusing on your breathing helps to get important oxygen into your body, carbon dioxide and toxins out, as well as relaxing your muscles, improving sleep, reducing stress, and reducing headaches. So don’t underestimate how important breathing is! 3/5/2023 0 Comments Massage is just like a movieI saw a post saying “a massage is just like a movie, really relaxing and a total escape, except in a massage you’re the star. And you don’t miss anything by falling asleep!” (Elizabeth Jane Howard).
I really related to this, now I am doing aromatherapy massages. Aromatherapy allows every massage to be tailored to your individual needs. By carefully choosing the right combination of essential oils, you will be in the starring role of relaxation. But, it will be for real, not an act! 3/5/2023 0 Comments EndorphinsHow often do you hear or use the phrase “that got the endorphins flowing”?
What have you done to warrant that phrase? Why are endorphins useful? You may experience an “endorphin-rush” after exercise, eating chocolate, having a great time with friends. Endorphins have a number of useful effects on our bodies and minds, which I will be looking at this week. The first is how it affects our pain levels. The word “endorphin” comes from two words: firstly “endogenous” which means it comes from within the body; secondly “morphine” which you may recognise as an opiate pain reliever. Therefore, endorphins are the body’s own pain reliever. Research published in 2021, looking at effect of pain and endorphin levels in liver transplant patients, showed that foot reflexology reduced pain levels significantly in patients, compared to those who did not receive reflexology. Reflexology helps the body to increase the release of endorphins from the pituitary and hypothalamus glands in the brain. When endorphins interact with specific receptors in the brain, they reduce our perception of pain. Endorphins are a form of neurotransmitter, important for the transmission of nerve impulses. Our feet have over 7,000 nerve endings which are stimulated through thumb and finger pressure during a reflexology treatment. The stimulation of specific reflex points help to remove blockages, allowing the nerve impulses to flow more freely and efficiently helping the body to rebalance. It is a common question I am being asked: “How often should I have a massage?”
There is no hard and fast rule but perhaps the following information will help you. For relaxation - it is entirely up to you! You can have them weekly, fortnightly, monthly or longer. As the saying goes “prevention is better than cure” so I would definitely recommend you book in regularly. For pain relief - I would recommend weekly or fortnightly to get on top of the aches and pains. For relief of knots - you will probably benefit from weekly sessions for approximately 4 weeks initially. Then a session each month will help to reduce the likelihood of the knots returning. 3/5/2023 0 Comments LymphoedemaI have been working with a lovely lady who has lymphoedema.
What is lymphoedema? Lymphoedema is a chronic condition where fluid builds up in the tissues when the lymphatic system is not working effectively. The lymphatic system is part of the immune system. It carries waste products, bacteria and viruses in fluid to the lymph nodes which filter out the waste from the body. Lymphoedema can occur where there is a blockage or damage in the lymph nodes. This can be as a result of cancer treatment but often the cause is unknown. Lymphoedema symptoms include swelling, which can be in any part of the body, but most commonly occurs in the legs and arms. Lymphoedema must be diagnosed by a doctor following specific tests. It can be controlled through compression bandaging, weight control, exercise, massage. Reflexology can help to stimulate the lymphatic reflexes to improve the lymphatic system. I have been seeing my client fortnightly since September and have managed to reduce her circumference measurements from toe to knee by 4-5 cm. This may not, initially, sound much but this has allowed her to buy slippers and shoes (which she has not had for years), legs feel less heavy, her mobility is easier and even her friends have noticed and commented. All of these have improved her self-confidence. That is absolutely priceless! Whilst reflexology cannot cure lymphoedema, it can help to manage symptoms. It will take several appointments to get symptoms under control, and then maintenance treatments thereafter. I have been a nurse for over 25 years and understand how lymphoedema can affect you physically and emotionally. 3/5/2023 0 Comments How are essential oils used?Aromatherapy uses essential oils generally through inhalation and massage.
Essential oils may be added to creams, water, diffuser, burners in order to stimulate the olfactory nerves in the nose. These connect to the limbic system in the brain, associated with feelings and emotions. To administer the essential oils through massage, it is necessary to use a carrier oil. This allows the therapist’s hands to glide sufficiently over the skin. Massage involves warming up the skin to bring the small blood vessels to the surface, allowing the essential oils to be absorbed and transported around the body to be used as required. It is an incredibly relaxing form of massage. 3/5/2023 0 Comments Relaxation and rejuvenationIn today’s society, we live our lives at 100 mph, juggling lots of balls, and trying to reach unachievable goals.
Sound familiar? We are amazing machines, but even machines need regular servicing and resetting regularly. You are no different! Reflexology is focused on breaking the cycle of stress, rebalancing all the systems in the body and creating a sense of deep relaxation. After a session of reflexology you most likely will find you have a good night’s sleep (maybe more), re-energised, and focused. With regular sessions you will feel less stressed and anxious, fewer aches and pains, reduced headaches, better immunity, settled digestive system. 3/5/2023 0 Comments What are essential oils?Aromatherapy uses essential oils, but what exactly are essential oils?
Essential oils are obtained from flowers, stems, leaves, roots, sap and bark of specific plants and trees. The amount of oil produced varies from plant to plant, and the chemical composition can change depending on time of day or season the plant is gathered. There are different ways of extracting the oils including maceration, enfleurage, and steam distillation. |
